Neighborhood Christian School's 161 kindergarten through eighth grade
students read 12,562 books during this school year. "With the encouragement of
parents, teachers, and monthly school incentives," notes Neighborhood's Librarian
Kathy Vidmar, "the students set weekly and monthly goals and had a great deal of fun
reading an average of three to five books each week."
Neighborhood students set weekly goals with their parents, read books at their age
levels, and received awards for meeting those goals, including free personal pan pizzas
from Pizza Hut's nationwide Book-It reading program. "The goals are set to allow the
student to strive for a target," added Vidmar, "without sacrificing the purpose
of our program which is to instill joy and love of reading in every one of our
students."
"This excitement of reading experienced by Neighborhood students continues to
translate into better comprehension and higher achievement in all subject areas,"
noted Business Administrator Chris Bushey. "Our 2007-2008 Stanford Achievement Test
(SAT) results have just been received and published, and the test scores reflect a
continued pattern of high achievement across all grade levels."
